Assassination Attempt on John Paul II
Forty years ago on May 13, 1981, Pope John Paul II was shot and wounded by Mehmet Ali AÄŸca while entering St. Peter's Square in Vatican City.
The 23-year-old Turkish murderer fired four shots, one of which hit the Pope in the abdomen, narrowly missing vital organs.
The assassination attempt took place as Pope John Paul II was entering St. Peter's Square in his Fiat Popemobile. The vehicle is now on display in the Carriage Museum of the Vatican.
